Oct 6, 2025; Jacksonville, Florida, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (16) scores a touchdown against Kansas City Chiefs safety Jaden Hicks (21) during the second half at EverBank Stadium.

The Jacksonville Jaguars appeared to be on the verge of making a critical mistake during the final offensive play of their "Monday Night Football" matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence bailed them out in spectacular fashion, scoring a game-winning, 1-yard touchdown run despite being stepped on by right guard Patrick Mekari and falling to the ground at the 7-yard line.

That gifted Jacksonville its first win over Kansas City since 2009, and helped the AFC South-leading Jaguars improve to 4-1 on the season.

Lawrence was the driving factor in the victory. He posted solid passing numbers, completing 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but also led Jacksonville with 54 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 10 carries.

Patrick Mahomes did his part to try to help the Chiefs come back after the team squandered a 14-0 first-half lead. The 30-year-old completed 29 of 41 passes for 318 yards, one touchdown and one interception and, like Lawrence, led his team in rushing with 60 yards and a score.

But ultimately, Lawrence's performance and Mahomes' one, critical mistake – a 99-yard Devin Lloyd pick-six – were enough to drop the Chiefs to 2-3 on the season, keeping them a game back in the race for first place in the AFC West.

Jaguars vs Chiefs instant takeaways

  • The Chiefs offense remains one-dimensional: The Chiefs' offense is still too dependent on Patrick Mahomes. Kareem Hunt generated two rushing touchdowns, but Kansas City's running backs didn't generate much outside of a 33-yard burst from the veteran. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are still clearly missing Rashee Rice, especially with Travis Kelce still looking a step slower than usual and Xavier Worthy battling through ankle and shoulder injuries. Rice's return should take some pressure off Mahomes, but right now, responsibility for carrying the unit is falling largely on him.
  • A mobile Trevor Lawrence can catapult the Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence can – and should – keep running the ball. Lawrence's 54 rushing yards were the second-most he has posted in a game. He showed a knack for finding open lanes and good toughness when he needed to fight through contact for extra yards. Lawrence hasn't been known as a big-time scrambler during his NFL career, but as long as he's healthy, Liam Coen should give him the green light to move as he sees fit.
  • Jacksonville is a contender: The Jaguars are looking like a legitimate AFC contender. The Chiefs are still working out some kinks, but Kansas City has made the conference championship game in seven consecutive seasons. Jacksonville's win over Andy Reid's squad is a good sign that Coen's team can keep pace with the AFC's best teams. They may still be a tick behind teams like the Buffalo Bills, but Jaguars fans have to be happy with the way the team is trending just five weeks into the Coen era.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Trevor Lawrence scores go-ahead, 1-yard TD after stumbling to start play

The Jaguars nearly squandered great field position after a pass interference penalty put them at the 1-yard line. Lawrence stumbled to the ground right off the snap, but he managed to get up and scramble to the right.

Lawrence broke a tackle and was able to dive into the end-zone for the go-ahead score with 23 seconds left. Cam Little makes the extra point, and the Jaguars have a 3-point lead.

Jaguars 31, Chiefs 28

Trevor Lawrence feathers perfect pass to Brian Thomas Jr. to put Jaguars near red-zone

The Jaguars are moving the ball downfield quickly against the Chiefs. Lawrence launched a perfectly thrown 33-yard completion to Thomas to put Jacksonville at the 24-yard line with 54 seconds remaining.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Kareem Hunt runs in second score to put Chiefs ahead late

The Chiefs accomplished their goal, running the clock down to 1:45 remaining in regulation before scoring a go-ahead touchdown. Hunt was able to run through contact to get the 2-yard touchdown, his second of the game.

Harrison Butker made the extra point to extend Kansas City's lead to 28-24. The Jaguars will need a touchdown on their upcoming possession to overtake the Chiefs again.

Chiefs 28, Jaguars 24

Chiefs in field-goal range at 2-minute warning

The Chiefs have a clear goal in mind on their current offensive drive. They want to run as much time off the clock as possible and get into the end-zone for what they hope will be a game-winning score.

Kansas City is currently at Jacksonville's 24-yard line. That's well within Harrison Butker's field goal range.

Patrick Mahomes scrambles for first down after somehow avoiding sack

It looked like the Jaguars were going to be able to bring down Mahomes for a sack on a second-and-4 passing play. Instead, Mahomes somehow managed to stay on his feet and eventually escaped the pocket and dove for a first down.

Mahomes has been the Chiefs' leading rusher during Monday's game, just as he has been all season.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Cam Little makes 52-yard field goal to put Jaguars back ahead

The Jaguars have retaken the lead with 8:08 left to go in the fourth quarter, as Little made his first field goal from 50-plus yards of the 2025 NFL season.

The kick was set up by some more nice, elusive work by Travis Hunter. He caught a third-down checkdown from Trevor Lawrence and turned it into an 8-yard gain to make Little's kick easier.

Jaguars 24, Chiefs 21

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Kareem Hunt punches in 5-yard TD to tie game

The Chiefs have now ended the Jaguars' run of 21 consecutive points. It took them just two plays after the interception to get into the end-zone after Hunt ran through a gaping hole and punched his way into the end-zone.

Harrison Butker made his extra point to tie the game at 21 with 12:20 left in regulation.

Jaguars 21, Chiefs 21

Trevor Lawrence throws interception after Chiefs punt

The Jaguars defense managed to force a Chiefs punt, but just a couple of plays later, Lawrence threw an interception to Kansas City cornerback Trent McDuffie.

McDuffie did well to catch the throw close to the ground. It wasn't immediately clear who Lawrence was attempting to target on the play, but his gaffe set the Chiefs up with good field position on Jacksonville's 19-yard line.

Jaguars leading Chiefs 21-14 entering fourth quarter

Jacksonville has scored 21 unanswered points and will take a lead into the fourth quarter against the Chiefs.

Devin Lloyd has been the Jaguars' big hero, as he turned a potential Chiefs scoring drive into a pick-six after undercutting a pass from Patrick Mahomes to JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence has continued to improve as the game has progressed. He has completed 12 of 16 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown while adding 44 yards and a score on the ground.

The Chiefs still have plenty of time to get back in the game, and Patrick Mahomes will look to add to his career tally of 19 fourth-quarter comebacks.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Devin Lloyd logs 99-yard pick-six to give Jaguars first lead

The Chiefs were in the process of driving down the field for a score of their own. Instead, Patrick Mahomes tossed an interception at the goal line, as Lloyd undercut a pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster.

None of the Kansas City offensive players could bring down Lloyd as he ran the ball back. Kareem Hunt and Tyquan Thornton each had chances, but Lloyd managed to score and give the Jaguars their first lead of the evening at 21-14.

Jaguars 21, Chiefs 14

Xavier Worthy injury update: Chiefs WR briefly exits game, returns

Worthy entered Monday's game dealing with an ankle injury that swelled up during the Chiefs' flight to Jacksonville on Sunday. He appeared to aggravate the injury midway through the third quarter, but he returned to the field after briefly receiving attention on the sideline.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Trevor Lawrence scrambles for 10-yard TD to tie game

The Jaguars have come back from a 14-0 deficit to tie the Chiefs midway through the third quarter. This time, Lawrence was able to take it in himself, as he saw a running lane develop in front of him and took it into the end-zone untouched.

Cam Little made the extra point to tie the game at 14-all. Lawrence now has a game-high 44 rushing yards on seven carries.

Jaguars 14, Chiefs 14

Trevor Lawrence hits Travis Hunter for a 44-yard catch

Lawrence made a beautiful downfield throw to Hunter on the Jaguars' first drive of the second half. The quarterback looked like he was ready to run up the middle before he pulled up and launched a deep ball to Hunter.

Hunter jumped up to high-point the ball and was able to bring it down to put the Jaguars in scoring range.

Jaguars defense gets second consecutive 3-and-out to open second half

The Chiefs moved the ball with ease for much of the first half. The Jaguars have now stopped them on back-to-back possessions, forcing a punt from Matt Araiza to open the half.

The Jaguars will get the ball at their own 13-yard line, trailing 14-7, early in the third quarter.

Trevor Lawrence stats at halftime

Lawrence leads the Jaguars in both passing and rushing at halftime. He has completed 9 of 13 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown while adding 34 yards on six carries.

Unlike Mahomes, Lawrence has one turnover, which came on a goal-line fumble when he tried to extend the ball for the score on a fourth-and-goal sneak.

Patrick Mahomes stats at halftime

Mahomes performed well during the first half. He completed 14 of 17 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown while adding a 9-yard touchdown run on the ground.

Mahomes has shown good downfield chemistry with Tyquan Thornton (three catches, 90 yards) while Travis Kelce (three catches, 17 yards, 1 TD) remains a reliable, security blanket for the veteran passer.

Chiefs take 14-7 lead into halftime

The Jaguars completed one downfield pass to Brian Thomas Jr. on their final drive of the half, but a holding penalty ultimately ended their chances of getting in scoring range.

As a result, Kansas City will take a seven-point lead into halftime. Patrick Mahomes has been the catalyst for the Chiefs' offense, completing 14 of 17 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown while adding a 9-yard touchdown run on the ground.

The Jaguars have rebounded nicely after a slow start to the half, as Trevor Lawrence has led the team to the goal-line on each of their last two drives.

Kansas City will get the ball coming out of the locker room, so Andy Reid's squad will have a chance to build on its lead.

Jaguars force 3-and-out after Josh Hines-Allen blows up pop-pass on first down

The Jaguars are going to get one more chance to score before halftime. They found a way to stop Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs after Hines-Allen got a great read on a pass to Xavier Worthy and brought him down for a 6-yard loss.

The good news for the Chiefs? Matt Araiza's punt pinned the Jaguars back at their own 8-yard line. Jacksonville has just 54 seconds and one timeout to get into scoring range.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Parker Washington gets Jaguars on board with 3-yard TD reception

The Jaguars made the Chiefs pay for their inability to intercept Trevor Lawrence. The 26-year-old quarterback threw a perfect pass to Washington to get Jacksonville on the board.

Cam Little's extra point was good, cutting Kansas City's lead to 14-7. The Chiefs will now have 2:38 remaining in the first half to answer Jacksonville's first score.

Chiefs 14, Jaguars 7

Chiefs nearly intercept Trevor Lawrence but can't corral deflection

Lawrence had an open man, Tim Patrick, and feathered a perfect downfield throw to him. However, Patrick was unable to bring the ball in and instead knocked it into the air.

A few different Chiefs had a chance to make the catch, but Nick Bolton couldn't bring it in after Drue Tranquill bumped into him. That allowed Jacksonville to keep the ball.

Travis Hunter shows great agility on first catch of day

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner made his first catch in the second quarter. He quickly shook off two Chiefs defenders and ran well after the catch to get a first down.

Jaguars vs. Chiefs score: Patrick Mahomes scores 9-yard TD on read-option run

It didn't take long at all for the Chiefs to capitalize on Lawrence's goal-line fumble. Kansas City went 97 yards in five plays, thanks to a 33-yard run by Kareem Hunt and a 34-yard reception by Tyquan Thornton.

On first-and-goal, Mahomes faked a handoff to Isiah Pacheco and scampered into the end-zone untouched. Harrison Butker's extra point was good, and Kansas City's lead is now 14-0.

Chiefs 14, Jaguars 0

Trevor Lawrence fumbles on fourth-and-goal dive, Chiefs recover

Liam Coen and the Jaguars decided to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Coen called for Lawrence to dive over the top and extend the ball to cross the goal-line, but it was punched out just inches shy of it by Nick Bolton.

The play was upheld after review, so Jacksonville's nine-play drive will end without scoring any points.

Chiefs lead Jaguars 7-0 after first quarter, but Jacksonville driving

Kansas City came out sharper than Jacksonville, outgaining the Jaguars 137-74 over the first 15 minutes. However, after two, three-and-outs, the Jaguars have found a rhythm on their third drive and are in a goal-to-go opportunity.

Patrick Mahomes has completed 9 of his first 11 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown while Travis Kelce has three catches for 17 yards and a score.

Birthday boy Trevor Lawrence, after failing to complete his first two passes, has completed 3 of 5 passes for 56 yards.

Patrick Mahomes looking sharp early vs. Jaguars

Mahomes and the Chiefs are moving the ball well to start the game. The veteran passer has completed 9 of his first 11 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Mahomes has shown off his typical playmaking ability throughout the game. Notably, he has completed two downfield passes to Tyquan Thornton, one while off-balance on the run and another that he underthrew while under pressure but saw the speedster come back to.

Jaguars vs Chiefs score: Patrick Mahomes finds Travis Kelce for 2-yard touchdown

The Chiefs are on the board first on "Monday Night Football." Mahomes capped off a nine-play, 72-yard drive by finding Kelce open on a flat route.

Originally, the officials threw a flag for offensive pass interference on the play, as JuJu Smith-Schuster threw a pick on the play. However, they picked up the flag, as the crew deemed the veteran receiver was within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the contact occurred, which is legal.

Harrison Butker made the extra point to give the Chiefs a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Chiefs 7, Jaguars 0

Hollywood Brown whistled for 15-yard penalty after smacking Jourdan Lewis

Brown and Lewis were jawing after a 1-yard run by Kareem Hunt, and that led the Chiefs receiver to smack Lewis across the helmet with an open hand. Brown was called for a 15-yard penalty as a result, backing the Chiefs up on their second drive of the day.

Jaguars go 3-and-out again after Trevor Lawrence called for illegal forward pass

Jacksonville's second drive got off to an inauspicious start when Lawrence attempted to throw a ball after he already crossed the line of scrimmage. That put the Jaguars behind the chains, and they couldn't recover.

Logan Cooke uncorked another solid, 52-yard punt, so Kansas City will get the ball on its own 29-yard line after a 3-yard return by Nikko Remigio

Chiefs flip the field but punt after incompletion to Travis Kelce

Kansas City moved the ball 45 yards on its first drive, but the Jaguars were able to come up with a key stop just across midfield. Patrick Mahomes looked Kelce's way on a third-and-2, but the pass went incomplete, as the veteran tight end was tightly covered by rookie Travis Hunter.

Matt Araiza punted the ball back to Jacksonville, and the kick was fair caught at the 14-yard line.

Josh Simmons starting at left tackle

After being downgraded to questionable less than half an hour before game time, Simmons is starting at left tackle for the Chiefs. The rookie is dealing with an illness but evidently is feeling well enough to play, at least for now.

Jaguars go 3-and-out to open "Monday Night Football" game with Chiefs

The Jaguars ran the ball twice with Travis Etienne for 8 yards before targeting the running back on a third-down pass. Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill appeared to hit Etienne early, but no flags were thrown.

A good punt from Logan Cooke pinned the Chiefs deep at their own 9-yard line. Patrick Mahomes will have his first chance to lead Kansas City's offense.

Chiefs win coin toss, defer to the second half

The Jaguars will have the first chance to possess the ball on "Monday Night Football."

Chiefs-Jaguars prediction

The Jaguars have been among the best in the NFL at taking the ball away, but their offense still needs some kinks worked out. Their rushing offense has been one of the better attacks in football, while the passing game is firmly middle of the pack - that's not entirely encouraging considering the investment on offense between Trevor Lawrence, Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr. That all said, the Chiefs are simply the better team, even on the road, and that will show tonight.
