TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — These fluffy insects may look soft and cuddly, but as one of the most venomous caterpillars in the country, they pack a serious punch.
The puss caterpillar, which eventually grows into the southern flannel moth, is found as far north as New Jersey and as far west as Texas and is commonly spotted in Florida during the spring and fall.
At only an inch long and covered in soft hairs, they seem harmless, but hidden beneath a fuzzy exterior are sharp spines that stick to your skin and deliver an extremely painful sting.
These caterpillars are a light brown and gray color and blend in well with their favorite habitats, citrus, oak, and elm trees. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled when you're in their neighborhood, even a quick brush can leave you stuck with venomous barbs
