Loveland is in second place after the first day of the Class 4A boys state golf tournament Monday at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont.

The Red Wolves shot a cumulative 223 and are five strokes behind first-place Broomfield. However, four teams are within five strokes of Loveland. Mead is in third, two strokes behind the Red Wolves with a 225.

Senior Cole Underwood led Loveland’s trio of golfers on the first day. He shot a 2-over par 72 and is tied for fifth place. He was at 1-under par with one hole to play, but made a triple bogey on his last hole, which was No. 9 because he started his round on No. 10.

Junior Will Sallee shot a 3-over par 73 and is tied for ninth place. Sallee also started on No. 10 and was at 5-over par with three holes remaining and he birdied No. 7 and No. 8 before ma
