JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky. —

The Jeffersontown Fire Department is the first in the state to switch both fire and EMS to a new schedule, going from 24 hours on and 48 hours off to 24 hours on and 72 hours off.

They first told WLKY about this switch in March .

It officially started in July, and now three months later, fire and EMS staff say it's been a game-changer.

"It's been great. 24, 48 was very difficult," said Jeffersontown fire Cpt. Ty Kuhn. "You go home. If you've been out all night running fires, you're tired. You don't really have that day to rest and calm down. Then you go to the next day, and that's your only day. And then you're right back at it."

In addition to more time to recover from work, first responders say the new schedule has provided a better work-life balance.
