AUSTIN, Texas — Parents and staff affiliated with Austin ISD had the weekend to digest the possible new reality of their schools after the district came out with its plan to close and consolidate several campuses in the 2026-2027 school year .

In the Bryker Woods neighborhood in central Austin, some residents have shown support through signages and Halloween decorations that read, "Bryker Woods forever" and "Standing tall for Bryker Woods."

Bryker Woods Elementary is one of the 13 schools AISD announced is slated to shut down.

Teal Pennebaker has a second and a fifth grader at the school. While she caught wind of Bryker Woods being on the closure list, she expressed confusion over the reasoning regarding the building being too old — since parents voted on a 2022 bond program to ren
