The mother of an Australian man detained while trying to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza says she is "very worried" and "shocked" at communications with the Australian government following reports her son has been physically abused.
Surya McEwen, from Mullumbimby on the Far North Coast of NSW, was detained along with hundreds of other activists on October 2 as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to bring food and medical supplies into Gaza.
His mother, Jacinta McEwen, said she had received reports that her son had suffered humiliating treatment and physical abuse while in prison, and was on a hunger strike.
She said she was angry that she had not been contacted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
