Canyon ISD announced Monday evening that offensive coordinator and associate head coach Matt Lovorn will take over as the Eagles’ acting head football coach, effective immediately.
The news comes on the heels of an open week for Canyon. The Eagles are 4-1 on the season and begin District 2-4A Division I play against West Plains on Friday.
Todd Winfrey was hired as Canyon’s head coach in 2021, succeeding longtime coach Blake Bryant after serving as an assistant with the Eagles for 21 years.
Winfrey logged a 36-14 record during his time at the helm in Canyon.
Lovorn joined the Eagles’ staff in 2023 after serving as the head football coach at Stratford. Lovorn led the Elks to a Class 2A Division II state championship in 2021.
