OpenAI’s agreement to buy tens of billions of dollars worth of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) graphics processing units added $US63.4 billion ($96 billion) to the chipmaker’s market value overnight.
The biggest beneficiary from that surge in value? Probably, OpenAI.
The deal, under which OpenAI will buy 6 gigawatts worth of AMD’s graphics processing units (GPUs), is the latest example of the creative measures OpenAI’s Sam Altman and leaders of other AI start-ups are taking to keep up with the extraordinary financial demands that their scramble for supremacy in the sector is imposing on them.
OpenAI, or its third-party cloud providers, will fund the purchases of the AMD GPUs.
