A 19th Judicial District Court judge ruled Monday that Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill cannot be forced to defend the state’s new congressional map before the U.S. Supreme Court, dismissing a lawsuit filed by members of the Legislative Black Caucus and several Democratic lawmakers and granting exceptions to Murrill.
The lawmakers argued that Murrill had a duty to defend the laws passed by the Louisiana Legislature, including the congressional map drawn and approved in 2024 to create two majority-Black districts in compliance with the Voting Rights Act.
The map, approved after years of litigation, was challenged in federal court by a group of self-described “non-African Americans.” It was used during the 2024 elections. The Supreme Court heard arguments about the map in March. At t
