The Supreme Court on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) agreed to hear on October 10 a plea challenging the Madras High Court’s (HC) decision to deny a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the September 27 stampede at Karur , which occurred during a political rally of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay and claimed 41 lives, leaving over 60 injured.

A Bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran took note of the appeal filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan seeking a CBI investigation into the incident.

“A plea for a CBI probe has been dismissed , whereas a single judge has observed that he is not satisfied with the probe conducted (into the stampede),” the petitioner’s counsel told the Bench.
