LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has dropped its plan to add illegal rules to nearly $1.4 billion in Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grants after a lawsuit was filed .
Earlier this year, the Trump Administration said that states could only receive these funds if they agreed to help enforce federal immigration laws.
VOCA grants are used to help people who have been victims of crimes. In Michigan, these funds range from $27 million to $43 million each year and are given to around 115 organizations.
These groups support victims of child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and human trafficking.
They include:
Child advocacy centers
Programs with sexual assault nurses
Domestic violence shelt
