Heavy rain hit Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, catching many commuters off guard. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for the city, predicting moderate rainfall along with light thunderstorms and lightning. The IMD warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-60 kmph in various parts of central, southwest, west, northwest, and north Delhi.
On Tuesday morning, the capital recorded a minimum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, which is 1.3 degrees below normal. The rain was attributed to a Western Disturbance affecting the region. In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Safdarjung weather station recorded 12.6 mm of rainfall, while Palam and Ridge stations reported 11 mm and 11.7 mm, respectively. The maximum temperature for the day is expected to be around 35 degrees Celsius.
The heavy rainfall also impacted flight operations at Delhi Airport. An advisory was issued, warning passengers that weather conditions could lead to delays. Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet advised travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Air India stated, "Rain may impact flight operations to and from Delhi today. Please check your flight status before heading to the airport and allow extra time for your journey due to possible slow-moving traffic." IndiGo echoed similar sentiments, urging passengers to plan ahead due to potential air traffic congestion.
The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi stood at 68 at 9 a.m., falling within the satisfactory category. The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 500, with lower values indicating better air quality.
Looking ahead, the weather forecast for Wednesday indicates a partly cloudy sky with temperatures expected to range between 31-33°C for the maximum and 20-22°C for the minimum. Winds are predicted to blow from the northeast at speeds of 5-10 kmph in the morning, increasing to 10-15 kmph in the afternoon. Thursday is expected to be mainly clear with similar temperature ranges.
As the city braces for more rain, residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and plan their travel accordingly.
