Following a rare October Harvest Moon — the full moon closest to the September equinox — which rose over Bristol last night (October 6), many are hoping to catch a glimpse of the next supermoon, which is set to appear before the year's end.

Last night's Harvest Moon was particularly extraordinary as it was also a supermoon, something which doesn't always occur.

Supermoons happen when the moon reaches its full phase while at the nearest point to Earth during its orbital path, according to the BBC's Sky at Night Magazine.

The name derives from the season when farmers traditionally collect their harvests before the winter period arrives.
