CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- While it is still more than a year away, the race for North Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat is already shattering fundraising records. That’s according to the team behind former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s campaign.

In the last three months, Cooper’s team has raised $14.5 million, $10.9 million in campaign donations and $3.7 million from a fundraising committee. While the data is not public yet, the campaign claimed that 90% of contributions were $100 or less.

“This is a huge number. What it means for democracy, what it means for how we’re spending money, folks can argue. But no one can question that. This is an impressive figure,” Western Carolina Professor Chris Cooper said.
