NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A professor emeritus of applied physics at Yale University was awarded a 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics, according to the university.
Michel Devoret received his award for the "discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electric circuit.”
Devoret, alongside John Clarke and John M. Martinis' experiments, showed quantum physics "in action."
The laureates were able to conduct and demonstrate the experiments in a system that was big enough to be handheld.
The experiments were conducted in 1984 and 1985 with an electronic circuit built of superconductors.
