A man in Chile who accidentally received 300 times his monthly salary has won a court battle to keep the money, three years after the shocking payroll error made global headlines.
The worker, an office assistant at food company Dan Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos de Chile, usually earned around £386 a month. But in May 2022, his employer mistakenly transferred £127,000 to his account.
According to reports, the company contacted the employee immediately after discovering the error. He initially agreed to return the money. But just three days later, he handed in his resignation and vanished.
The company then filed a legal complaint accusing him of theft, but after a lengthy trial, a judge in Santiago ruled that it was not a criminal act but rather an “unauthorised collection.”
