A medical helicopter crashed on a highway in Sacramento, critically injuring three people.

The Sacramento Fire Department says the crash happened Monday evening and a pilot, nurse and paramedic have been taken to hospitals and are in critical condition.

One woman was trapped underneath the helicopter and was rescued with the help of motorists who lifted part of the aircraft.

No one on the highway was injured.

A spokesperson for the Valley Division of California Highway Patrol says the crash closed the eastbound lanes of Highway 50.

Authorities say the cause of the crash is under investigation.
