Landslide Claims 18 Lives in Himachal Pradesh Bus Tragedy

At least 18 people lost their lives when a private bus was hit by a massive landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred in the Bhalughat area of the Jhandutta assembly segment while the bus was en route from Marotan to Ghumarwin, carrying around 30-35 passengers.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with police and district officials on-site. So far, 18 bodies have been recovered from the debris, and the chances of survival for any remaining passengers are considered bleak, according to a policeman involved in the rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured." He announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also conveyed his condolences, describing the incident as deeply shocking. He has instructed officials to expedite rescue operations and ensure that all injured individuals receive immediate medical attention.

Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the debris, but rescue efforts are complicated by difficult terrain and ongoing rainfall in the area, which has persisted since Monday. A police investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the landslide.

This tragic event highlights the dangers posed by landslides in hilly regions, especially during the monsoon season. The state government has pledged to support the affected families during this challenging time.
