AUGUSTA, Maine — Emergency homeless shelters across Maine are getting new financial support through a law that took effect this month.

The legislation, introduced by state Sen. Rachel Talbot Ross, includes a one-time investment of $4.47 million for the upcoming fiscal year.

Talbot Ross, D-Cumberland, said the funding is aimed at stabilizing emergency shelter operations and ensuring that people experiencing homelessness have access to safe, reliable shelter.

According to a MaineHousing study, the average cost to operate a single shelter bed in the state is about $100 per night.

The additional funding is expected to help shelters cover operating expenses and continue serving individuals and families in need.
