The Pink Muhly at Railroad Park is blooming.

One of our favorite early October traditions here at Bham Now is to watch the appearance of the pink native grass turn “Birmingham’s front lawn” into a pink wonderland.

For the next six weeks, the thigh-high grass will show-out throughout the park.

Pink Muhly’s benefits

In addition to its beauty, Lea Ann Macknally, president of Macknally Land Design, told Bham Now in 2023 that the grass has provided numerous benefits to Railroad Park, including: • Habitat for birds and wildlife in the park • Planted along the slopes of the park, the grass helps control erosion throughout the park • The grass itself is very low-maintenance, drought-tolerant and doesn’t require fertilizer
