BROWNING, Mont. — The Blackfeet Nation says a federal government shutdown could have serious effects on Montana’s economy, especially in areas that depend on national park tourism.
According to a new National Park Service report, visitors spent about $838 million in Montana communities near parks and historic sites last year. That spending supported 9,293 jobs, generated $408 million in labor income, and contributed $1.2 billion in total economic output.
Glacier National Park, which borders the Blackfeet Reservation, drew about 3.2 million visitors in 2024. Those visitors supported 5,188 jobs and generated $656 million in local economic output.
Yellowstone National Park, which spans Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, brought in 4.7 million visitors, supporting 6,500 jobs and contributing $903
