BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Authorities are warning the public about bags found in the area marked with a familiar children's cartoon character.
The Brattleboro Police Department said that bags marked with pictures of Elmo from "Sesame Street" have been found unattended in public spaces, which they say could lead to unsuspecting children or other people picking them up.
The small wax paper bags are often used to package illicit drugs including heroin and fentanyl, according to authorities.
"While no overdoses have been linked to these specific bags at this time, the contents are believed to be dangerous and potentially lethal if handled or ingested."
Anyone who encounters one of the "Elmo" bags is asked to call the department's general line at (802) 257-7946 or the anonymous time
