HARPERS FERRY – As the federal government enters its second week being shut down, visitors to Harpers Ferry National Park can still enjoy many of the park’s normal amenities thanks to a state-funded agreement to keep the park open on the state’s dime.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Friday that West Virginia has reached a “donation agreement” with the National Park Service and the Trump administration to keep the state’s two national parks operating during the shutdown. The deal makes West Virginia the first state in the nation to fund its own national parks during a federal closure.
