MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — A Manteo Police officer who shot an armed woman last week was justified in doing so, the district attorney for the First Prosecutorial District said Tuesday.

The woman, Denny Winslow, 49, had called 911 Oct. 2 from the 200 block of Mother Vineyard Road on Roanoke Island to say that a man who she said had previously forced himself into her apartment, stole prescription medication and assaulted her had returned. The previous call, made Sept. 29, was investigated but unsubstantiated, according to District Attorney Jeffrey J. Cruden.

Winslow's call to 911 Oct. 2 stated "the man that robbed me is back," and quickly hung up the phone, with repeated calls from Dare County communications going unanswered, Cruden said.
