ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - The Louisiana Supreme Court has ruled that Attorney General Liz Murrill and her office do have the authority to represent the state in post-conviction relief cases involving inmates on death row, reversing a lower court decision that barred the Attorney General’s involvement.

In an opinion issued Tuesday, Oct. 7, the court concluded that the state’s constitution “undeniably” allows the Attorney General to represent Louisiana in these cases, particularly when acting with the written consent of a district attorney.

The ruling stemmed from the long-running death penalty case of Antoinette Frank, a former New Orleans police officer convicted in the 1990s for the triple murder of two restaurant employees and a fellow officer.
