COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A new federal lawsuit is challenging South Carolina’s recent restrictions on books in schools.

The American Civil Liberties Union announced a federal lawsuit on Tuesday that it filed on behalf of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians and three minor public school students. The South Carolina Department of Education and the Greenville County School District are named as defendants.

The lawsuit takes aim at Regulation 43-170 , which bans books in all K-12 public schools that contain “descriptions or depictions of sexual conduct.”

The regulation went into effect in 2024 and has led to 22 books being banned or restricted across the state.
