WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — Many federal employees have been furloughed and others have been working without receiving pay since the government shutdown started last week.

A number of banks are taking steps to help those who are impacted.

Here's a look at the assistance currently available in Southern New England:

Citizens Bank

On the Providence-based bank's website, Citizens said, "If an income interruption affects your ability to pay your balance, we can help. Contact us to discuss flexible payment options."

Citizens also noted that proactively reaching out can help the bank help customers avoid "long-term financial strain."

Customers impacted by the shutdown can call 1 (800) 234-6002 for mortgage assistance and 1 (888) 438-9888 for general support.
