San Diego’s director of finance and city comptroller has been named the next chief financial officer, pending approval by the San Diego City Council.

Mayor Todd Gloria on Tuesday announced the appointment of Rolando Charvel, who has 26 years of experience in public finance.

He would be returning to the position – he served as the city’s CFO from 2017-2020. He started as an intern in 1999.

If approved, Charvel will replace Matthew Vespi, who was hired as the Port of San Diego’s chief administrative officer last month.

The CFO leads the city’s financial strategy – including overseeing the budget – accounting, and the city’s treasury. The person in the post also serves as the mayor’s adviser on financial policy and fiscal planning.
