SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested for allegedly murdering his roommate in Salt Lake City after police say his death on Sunday launched a suspicious death investigation.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said the man, 59-year-old Timothy Ruthenberg, was found dead in his apartment in the Poplar Grove Neighborhood just before 11:30 p.m., near North Temple.

“The state medical examiner’s office later determined Ruthenberg’s death a homicide,” police said.

Police said they arrested Ruthenberg’s roommate, 54-year-old Michael Bynum, on suspicion of murder after discovering he was the last person seen leaving the apartment.

Detectives tracked Bynum to the Salt Lake City Public Library where he was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of murder into the Salt Lake County Jail.
