NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- It's how you get to where you're going before you get to where you're going.

Newark Liberty's AirTrain began rolling during the Clinton administration. Some 30 years later, it's due for an upgrade.

"It is outdated, it is undersized," said Sarah McKeon, Director of Aviation for the Port Authority of NY and NJ.

On Tuesday, the Port Authority broke ground on a $3.5 billion project to replace the aging monorail with one that they say will be larger, more comfortable, and more pleasant.

"It'll move up to 50,000 passengers a day over a new, 2.5-mile guideway that will connect seamlessly with terminal A and future facilities," said Ralph D'Apuzzo, the Port Authority's Senior Program Director, "and will be built with the future in mind."
