STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A bipartisan group of federal lawmakers, led by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, are asking the U.S. Department of Commerce to help fully restore the sale of American alcohol in Canada.
On Sept. 30, the elected officials penned a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick requesting his assistance in restoring alcohol exports to Canada after the majority of Canadian provinces banned the sale of U.S. spirits in response to tariffs imposed by the federal government earlier this year.
The lawmakers note that during the first half of the year, U.S. exports of distilled spirits to Canada fell 62% and wine exports fell 67% compared to the same period in 2024.
