Indian National Captured While Fighting for Russia

NEW DELHI: Ukrainian forces have reportedly captured a 22-year-old Indian national, Majoti Sahil Mohammed, who was fighting for the Russian army. The Indian government is currently verifying these claims, as they have not received any formal communication from Ukraine regarding his detention. Majoti, a resident of Morbi in Gujarat, had gone to Russia on a student visa but was allegedly forced to join the military after being convicted on drug charges.

According to reports, Majoti stated that he was sentenced to seven years in prison for drug-related offenses. To avoid serving his sentence, he signed a contract with the Russian military, believing it would lead to his freedom. He underwent 16 days of training before being deployed to combat on October 1. After just three days, he surrendered to Ukrainian troops, expressing his unwillingness to fight. In a video released by Ukraine's 63rd Mechanized Brigade, he said, "I immediately put down my rifle...I needed help."

Majoti also claimed that he had not received the financial compensation promised to him for his service, which ranged from RUB 100,000 to 1.5 million (approximately $1,200 to $18,000). He expressed a desire to remain in Ukraine or return to India, stating, "I don't want to go back to Russia. There is no truth there, nothing. I'd rather go to prison here."

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has previously warned Indian nationals against joining the Russian military, highlighting the risks involved. They confirmed that there are still 27 Indian nationals serving in the Russian army and have raised concerns about the recruitment of Indians into military service under false pretenses. The MEA has been in contact with families of affected individuals and has urged caution regarding offers to serve in the Russian armed forces.

This incident follows reports of other Indian nationals being misled into military service in Russia, often under the guise of job opportunities. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely as it seeks to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.
