SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - The South Bend Police Merit Board has voted to fire an officer who was arrested earlier this year .

Emanuel Garcia was sentenced last month to probation for a domestic battery case which happened while he was off duty. The 24-year-old will be serving 18 months of probation but no jail time.

This comes after he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors on domestic battery and resisting law enforcement charges. Five other charges against Garcia were already thrown out as part of his plea agreement.

No one in the meeting — in person or virtual — commented on the firing, and it was a unanimous decision from the board members.
