URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - Urbana schools were placed on a temporary lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a shooting nearby sent a woman to the hospital.

According to Urbana police, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of South Vine Street around 1:55 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers said they located a 21-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she remains in serious condition.

Police said due to the proximity of the incident to Urbana Middle School and Urbana High School, both schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution until the scene was determined to be secure.

After further investigation, officers identified the suspect as the victim’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Noah Allen of Urbana.

Allen was taken into custody
