A pair of Texas prison guards were fired and arrested after allegedly leaving an inmate to die locked inside a burning and smoke-filled cell, according to reports.
Lieutenant William Eugene Romero, 33, was charged with criminally negligent homicide and Sgt. Crystal Janelle West, 39, with second-degree manslaughter after the horrific incident Sunday at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility, Amarillo Globe-News reported .
“The agency is working closely with OIG and the Special Prosecution Unit so that those staff who allegedly failed to act will be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the department said in a statement to the outlet.
