WACO, Texas — In a city where approximately 35,000 residents speak almost exclusively Spanish, La Puerta has emerged as a vital resource center, breaking down barriers and creating pathways to opportunity for Waco's Latino community.
La Puerta , which translates to "the door" in English, is more than just what its name suggests. For Dr. Israel Loachamin, the organization's executive director and co-founder, the name carries deeper meaning.
"La Puerta is in Spanish because intentionally when I connect with this community, it has a key--- you need a key in order to open a door," Loachamin said.
That key, Loachamin explains, is what his organization provides: access to essential services, education and support that help Spanish-speaking residents unlock opportunities in Central Texas.
