BINGHAM, Maine (WABI) - The Maine Supreme Judicial Court is hearing cases at several high schools this week.

On Tuesday in Bingham at Upper Kennebec Valley High School, the high court heard oral arguments in three cases.

Two of those regarding alleged Sixth Amendment violations by the state.

This comes after the Kennebec County Superior Court ruled the state is in violation of the Sixth Amendment by not providing public defenders to people charged with a crime who can’t afford an attorney.

The state appealed to the high court. The American Civil Liberties Union argued that despite efforts by the legislature, the need for attorneys in a timely fashion is not being met.
