WASHINGTON, D.C. – Federal funding for rural airports may be at risk of running out if the government shutdown continues, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

The Essential Air Service provides funding for airline carriers to operate out of airports that would otherwise be unprofitable, and is considered a lifeline for travel in remote communities.

There are several airports in Montana reliant on the funding for operations, including airports in Butte, Glasgow, Havre, West Yellowstone and Wolf Point.
