WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - A program launched in West Haven going after drivers who skip out on car taxes has recouped about $140,000 in lost tax revenue.
The city contracted a Berlin-based company, Capital Tax Recovery, to scan license plates throughout West Haven to determine whether residents’ vehicles are registered with the state and list West Haven as their tax city.
Since January, 1,169 vehicles have been submitted for billing, according to Assessor Ann Marie Gradoia, who oversees the program for the city. Of those, 478 were unregistered, 66 were registered outside West Haven, and 102 were registered outside Connecticut.
