Bari Weiss, the incoming editor in chief of CBS News, once auditioned for a role on the hit daytime television show "The View," but tested so poorly with audiences that she "wasn't invited back," according to a new report.

Variety reported on Tuesday that Weiss auditioned for "The View" when host Meghan McCain left in 2021. However, audiences didn't seem to understand Weiss's "centrist-right contrarian politics" and instead chose Alyssa Farah Griffin, President Donald Trump's former strategic communications director.

"Bari Weiss — who had guest-hosted a few episodes of the panel show and was making waves with her just-launched news outlet The Free Press — wanted the job, and her then-CAA agents lobbied hard," the report reads in part.

"But Weiss didn’t test well with audiences, who didn’t understand her centrist-right contrarian politics. In fact, her focus group scores were so low that she wasn’t invited back to guest host, according to insiders," it adds.

The outlet reported that Weiss still has a desire to be in front of the camera, although it likely won't be an appearance on the famous "60 Minutes" show.

“She plays to an audience of 200 people,” one Hollywood executive with ties to Weiss told Variety. “It just happens to be that audience is made up of people like Jeff Bezos and Bill Ackman. The superrich f------ love her. She’s funny, she’s smart and she’s aligned with their politics.”
