LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A possible outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been identified at two sites in Lincoln County just north of Las Vegas, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
Testing identified the outbreak among ducks at Key Pittman Wildlife Management Area and Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, both located along U.S. 93.
NDOW tested 70 samples, with 10 ducks testing positive for avian influenza. Of those, seven were positive for the highly pathogenic variety, according to a Tuesday news release.
The current strain of the virus appears to pose a low risk for human infection, but NDOW is urging caution as waterfowl hunting season approaches, scheduled to begin Saturday morning. Hunters should be aware that HPAI is on the landscape, NDOW said.
