As fall settles in and yard work concludes, the department is emphasizing the importance of charging lawn tool batteries outside on a flat, dry surface to reduce fire risk.

If a battery heats up, any running equipment should never be left unattended. Proper winter storage of tools involves detaching batteries and emptying any fuel tanks, according to the department.
