Brockville officials are climbing down from development charge increases as high as 500 per cent, but a steep price hike for new construction remains a possibility.

So, too, does the prospect of the city scrapping the fees altogether.

Brockville council’s planning and development committee is recommending the city seek an update to a key development charges background study reflecting increases less drastic than the ones initially proposed. The full council is expected to vote on the recommendation next Tuesday.

As city hall awaits news from the Ontario government about a possible change in approach to the entire issue, council has until late December to decide whether to carry on with the current set of fees, implement the higher ones, or scrap them altogether.
