MADISON (WKOW) – State Senator Kelda Roys and Representative Jodi Emerson have introduced new legislation known as the Building Families Act, aimed at increasing access to fertility treatment and fertility preservation services by requiring insurance to cover some of the costs.
Fertility preservation refers to procedures like freezing eggs or sperm. Preservation services are often recommended to young cancer patients, and they need to start before the cancer treatment.
Dr. Lauren VanDeHey was blindsided by her cancer diagnosis at age 28. She utilized fertility preservation to set aside embryos before undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. She now faces debt from both cancer treatments and fertility services.
