SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego says more than $5 million was stolen from people living in Shelby County last year.

While law enforcement continues to warn about different scams, unfortunately, people continue to lose their money.

These scams come through social media, email, phone calls and even text messages. Whether the criminals behind them are local or international, law enforcement can investigate and put them behind bars.

Shelby County has its own cyber unit that is dedicated to investigating online crimes.

Samaniego said it starts with your report and an IP address connected to the scam.

If the criminal is local, they can find and arrest them.
