SNELLVILLE, Ga. — Residents in a Snellville neighborhood are celebrating a key victory after the Gwinnett County Planning Commission unanimously voted Tuesday night to recommend tighter restrictions on where crematoriums can be built — a decision prompted by widespread community opposition to a proposed funeral home and crematorium on Centerville Highway.

Concerned neighbors — including retirees and young families — packed into Tuesday's Planning Commission meeting to oppose the development, which they said threatens their health, property values, and overall quality of life.

The 8-0 vote by the commission means that any new crematorium in Gwinnett County will now require a special-use permit and must be located at least 1,000 feet away from residential homes.
