DETROIT — Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch got the exact scenario he foresaw when submitting his lineup card for Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Seattle Mariners.

The Tigers skipper and tactician moved right fielder Kerry Carpenter up to the leadoff spot for the first time since May 31.

The lefty hitter has been a point of emphasis for the Mariners during the series and often the one that creates stress for a right-handed pitcher and forces Seattle manager Dan Wilson to make a decision about when to pull that pitcher.

Hinch said before Tuesday’s 8-4 loss that he wanted to create that stress in the 19th at-bat and got his way in the fifth inning with Carpenter up with runners on the corners and one out.
