A drinking spree in Chitipa has ended in tragedy after a 48-year-old man identified as Matson Siame collapsed and died shortly after consuming kachasu on an empty stomach.

The incident happened on October 7, 2025 at Sopelera area, Traditional Authority Kameme.

According to Chitipa Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Mathews Mfune, Siame was notorious for his heavy drinking habits. On the fateful day, he was found lying lifeless on a heap of dry grass.

A postmortem conducted at Chitipa District Hospital confirmed that the cause of death was hypoglycaemia secondary to alcohol intoxication.

Sergeant Mfune has since warned the public against taking alcohol on an empty stomach, stressing the need for responsible drinking to avoid similar tragedies.
