Judges in a civil case before an appeals court ruled Oct. 3 that FirstEnergy does not need to release the results of internal investigations that it hired law firms to conduct.

The judges wrote that the investigations are protected from release because of attorney-client privilege and the "work-product doctrine."

A judge in a separate case ordered that multiple pieces of evidence not be shared in the upcoming criminal trial of former FirstEnergy executives. Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed.
