LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined 22 other attorneys general in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review a lower court ruling that would block individuals from suing to enforce the federal Voting Rights Act (VRA).
The coalition filed an amicus brief in Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians v. Howe, arguing in support of the right of private citizens to bring lawsuits under Section 2 of the VRA, a key provision that prohibits state and local governments from enacting racially discriminatory voting policies.
The Voting Rights Act, enacted in 1965, was designed to protect Americans from racial discrimination at the ballot box.
